Scholarships/Career Programs
EPUD currently runs multiple programs designed to promote careers in the utility industry. Please read on to learn more about scholarship and job shadow opportunities.
EPUD Em"POWER"ing Scholarships
Each January EPUD begins promoting our annual scholarship program. Currently, EPUD offers five scholarships in the amount of $1,250 to any EPUD Customer-Owner interested in pursuing a career in the utility industry. Applicants must live within the EPUD District, must have a High School diploma or equivalent, and must be interested in working for a utility. This includes careers in not only engineering, line-work, and power resources/energy management, but also in communications, accounting, and customer service. Scholarship applications are due each year by April 15 and recipients are announced in May. For more information, contact Hillary McBride at 744-7488 or hillary@epud.org.
EPUD Em"POWER"ing Job Shadows
EPUD offers job shadowing opportunities year-round in a variety of different fields including line-work, engineering, energy services, power resources, customer service, accounting, and communications. Interested participants should call Hillary McBride at 744-7488 to schedule a job shadow and complete all needed paperwork. We encourage all scholarship applicants to complete a job shadow before or after submitting their application.
More Information About Utility Careers
There is no "ONE WAY" to go about starting a career in the utility industry. Each utility has different preferences for hiring and different recommended means for training. There are several ways you can go about becoming a lineman, usually beginning with either a 10 week VOLTA training course, or a lineman college, then moving into a paid apprenticeship position with a utility for 3 years, then finally a full journeyman lineman. EPUD recommends several websites where you can find more information on various programs available:
