Automatic Meter Reading (AMR)
EPUD’s residential meters have now all been changed from the old dial meter, to the new high-tech, automated meter. EPUD Customer-Owners were not charged for the new meter.
Your new, state-of-the-art meter has a digital display instead of dials, and uses the power lines to transmit your energy usage. We’ll simply “read” your precise meter information from our office. Once all of our meters are reading to our system, the difference will be clear:
- Accuracy - The new digital meters reduce human error, so your energy readings and bills are more precise.
- Security - We'll no longer need to enter your yard to read your meter, so there's no need to unlock your gates or keep your pets inside on meter reading day. (REMINDER: Not all of the meters installed are reading at this time. EPUD still needs access to your meter until we are reading at 100%)
- Privacy - Meters won’t transmit any personal information or interfere with any electronic or medical devices you may have in your home.
As of September 2008, we are still working on getting all the new meters to communicate with our substations and office. 75% are now reading electronically, and we're installing line conditioning equipment and making other improvements to increase that percentage. As our numbers are not yet 100%, we still need to read some meters manually, so we ask that you still provide us access to your meter. REMINDER: Those of you who read your own meter STILL need to send in your cards each month.
The next step in the AMR process is installation of the polyphase meters, which serve businesses and industrial sites. These meters are more complicated than the residential installations, and require a Journeyman Lineman to complete. We will have about 1,400 meters to change out. When necessary, we will make arrangements with customers for the installations.
